24 FLAG 2012

“Daily Flag 24” by Darrell & Darlene at 81 Leuty Ave. 30” x 48”. Printed on vinyl banner. SOLD $200 Paying homage to Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup Cans and the 50th anniversary of the first exhibition of the series, Daily Flag 24 offers us a playful image to deliver a serious message. The twenty-four soup cans have 14 colour variants, but each square is none-the-less unique because of the background colour/soup can combination. The flagmaker stacked the cans to resemble the shape of a Christmas tree, then emphasized this shape by diagonally splitting the background colour on the outer cans to form strong triangular lines. Pop art aficionados will also notice the reference to Lichtenstein’s comic strip newsprint dots in the background, representing falling snow. A spoon represents the tree trunk and the star is made of five can openers. Canned food has become synonymous with Food Bank donations, and this flag reminds us not to forget about others in need during this festive season. For those who are wondering, Campbell’s is a supporter of Daily Bread Food Bank.
