23 FLAG 2012

“Daily Flag 23” by Filies & Murray at 90 Leuty Ave. 30” x 40″. Appliqué on recycled cotton. Flag made by friends of the household: Geoffrey, age 5, and Graeme, age 7. SOLD $50 Having spent weeks doing research and planning their flag, the boys opted in the end to strip away all extraneous design and work with the graphic nature of the numerals, turning them on their head to make this striking interpretation of the number 23. But synchronicity seems to be at work in this DailyFlag project – for here we have a flag made by boys using what is a form of tally mark counting, and in Flag 6 we had the same, boys using tally marks. And in Flag 6, we had a yellow brick road, while in this Flag 23 we have blue gingham, the fabric that Dorothy’s dress was made from in the Wizard of Oz. We are not sure what’s going on, but something beyond our control is surely at work here making connections for our flagmaking teams that must certainly mean something…I guess we shall have to wait for the end of the project to find out.
