18 FLAG 2012

“Daily Flag 18″ by Carl at 41 Leuty Ave. 18” x 30”. Transfer print on recycled cotton. SOLD $54 Luminescent light and gold ribbon surround the number 18 in Daily Flag 18, encouraging the viewer into a celebratory mood. And he or she may rightfully be in one, because this flag is, indeed, offering us a toast to Life. Chai, meaning ‘Life’ in Hebrew, is made up of two letters: ח (Chet), the 8th letter in the Hebrew alphabet, and י (Yodh), the 10th letter. Stylized in the Art Nouveau influenced plate to the right, Chet and Yodh stand out like illuminated letters. Together the two add up to 18, and, with the reference to Life itself, the number has attained a spiritual meaning in Judaism. Because of this connection between the idea of Life being represented in the number 18, the act of giving to charity is sometimes known as “giving Chai”, with charitable contributions being multiples of 18, so for example, $18, $36, $54, etc. And so, while the flagmaker offers us all a toast “to Life”, he also asks us all to consider giving.
