17 FLAG 2012

“Daily Flag 17″ by Geoff, Sharon & Family at 74 Leuty Ave. 40” x 60”. Acrylic paint on canvas. SOLD $110 This flag of seventeen 8-pointed stars – sixteen in a tight pattern and one ascending like a shooting star – is an homage to the Medieval flags of the seventeen contrade (or neighbourhoods) of Siena, Italy. In many cultures, the number 17 is deeply symbolic of rejuvenation and rebirth. Its many-layered references stretch from Islamic art and architecture to Buddhist drawings – both design traditions being evident in this striking piece – and even the guiding light that leads the three wise men to Bethlehem in the story of the Magi, represented by the eight-pointed star (1+7 = 8). Spiritually, the number 17, and the 8-pointed star it inspires, represents the junction between the spiritual and material worlds, and the capacity to rise from adversity better and stronger for the struggle. The flagmakers offer this flag in the belief that Toronto’s greatest strengths – its neighbourhoods and the people who live in them – will always allow us to rise to the occasion.
