13 FLAG 2012

“Daily Flag 13” by Steven & Christine at 17 Leuty Ave. 30” x 40” Inkjet and acrylic on vinyl banner. SOLD $200 Daily Flag 13 carries on the contemporary interpretation of the Twelve Days of Christmas to boldly address the issue of charity after the twelve days of gift-giving has come to an end. The traditional Christmas song starts off with a modest gift and the gifts increase in value and extravagance as the 12th day approaches, ending with twelve drummers drumming, as we saw in Daily Flag 12. The question naturally arises, what about the 13th day? What about the 14th, 15th, 16th and so on? The flagmakers represented the twelve days of Christmas with twelve circles on top. They are like dinner plates filled with currency. The patterns found on a $50 bill fill each plate, creating a decorative pattern reminiscent of the holidays at the same time as implying wealth. The large red circle on the bottom has no currency in it. It represents the 13th day and the remaining 352 days until the festive season starts again. The fork and knife are faint, suggesting their tenuous existence.
