14 Flag 2015

Daily Flag 14 on Monday, December 14 at 6 Violet by Christine & Uwe. 30”x46” Free-form plasma-cut by hand on 16 gauge stainless steel plate. “Hidden number, hidden hunger.” The number 14 has significant meaning in many cultures, including change and transformation, a strong hand, and a challenge to create balance. These are all elements of the fight against hunger in our own communities. In DailyFlag 14, references to the number 14, like hunger, hide in plain sight. The beach picnic may appear, at first, as a pleasing reminder of how wonderful life is. A closer look will reveal the number 14 in close proximity in the base of the picnic table, and at greater distance in the sails. Throughout the scene are the reminders for us to change, reach out with a strong hand and create more balance between the haves and have-nots: 14 waves, pebbles, planks, lane markings. The image attempts to draw attention to the perception of distance: the problem of hunger is perceived by many to be beyond the horizon where it can’t be seen. But the path and boardwalk shows that we are all connected, and that we should heed what the seagull is observing right at our feet. The seagull came to have a closer look and concluded that “it’s not a picnic unless there is food on the table”.
