01 Flag 2015

Daily Flag 1 on Tuesday, December 1 at 60 Leuty by Benedict Hilliard & Michelynn Laflèche. 56”x36” Varnished acrylic paint, spray paint and gold, silver and copper leaf on heavy weight primed canvas. ”A ‘city’ divided cannot stand by itself”. Flag 1 is an abstract interpretation of the city reflected on the lake at sunset seen from the island, suggesting two cities, or a city divided. The literal use of the division symbol speaks to the rising levels of inequality in Toronto, where income inequality has doubled between neighbourhoods in the last 30 years. But the vibrant colour choice speaks to possibility for change and Torontonians’ commitment to making our city a better place to live for everyone. We are one city, and we don’t have to be divided.
